The history of fumed oak begins in England, where the process of fuming oak was discovered in stables in the late 1800s. It was noted that the interior oak boards in certain stables had matured, and as a result, had deepened in color.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, fuming had become popular with furniture makers as part of the Arts & Crafts movement. The technique was introduced in the United States by Gustav Stickley in 1901 when he perfected fuming for his Mission style furniture. Today, Nantucket custom Flooring’s fumed oak still has close ties to this illustrious history, and our oak timbers still come from the same forests and lumber distributors as The Stickley Furniture Company.

Pre-finished
Our custom-milled pre-finished flooring line is available in eight different grain patterns, like our unfinished line, but arrive machine sanded and finished in your choice of eight elegant, custom colors.
Engineered
Our engineered fumed oak is a unique product that offers all the flexibility of our unfinished line with the added benefits of engineered construction. Mounted on premium quality Baltic Birch plywood, the fume will fully penetrate the 4mm white oak wear layer making this floor compatible with drum sanding.
